STATEWIDE DIRECTORY
This map catalogs named and recognized public access rocky intertidal areas. California also contains thousands of unnamed pools, so the directory does not claim that every depression in the coast is mapped.
Pins are general shoreline access points. Never cross private property, closed trails, wildlife closures, unstable bluffs, or unsafe surf to reach a marker.
MARINE LIFE GUIDE
Profiles cover tidepool invertebrates, reef fish, sharks, rays, marine mammals, kelp, algae, seagrass, squid, and jellies. Species summaries are written for California Tide Pools from factual reference material. Species photos use curated files, exact scientific-name matching, and source links.

VISIT SAFELY
Arrive before low tide and give yourself time to leave before water covers the route back.
North Coast and Big Sur swell can be especially powerful. Stay out of surge channels and off wet wave washed rock.
Seals, sea lions, seabirds, snowy plovers, and nesting colonies can close access seasonally.
Mussel beds, barnacles, algae, surfgrass, and anemones are living habitat.
Do not pry, collect, flip rocks, or reposition animals for photos.
Collection and fishing rules vary by site. Check current regulations before removing anything from the shore or water.
ABOUT CALIFORNIA TIDE POOLS
I started California Tide Pools because I was trying to find tide pools where I could conduct environmental studies, and there was no single resource that actually helped me compare places. Surfers can open a surf site and immediately see where to go, what the waves are doing, and what conditions look like. When I searched for tide pools, I mostly found scattered Reddit posts, individual park pages, and pins on Google Maps.
I wanted one place where someone could open a map, find rocky intertidal sites across California, understand what species live there, check access and environmental conditions, and learn how to visit without damaging the habitat. I also wanted the guide to be useful for students, researchers, families, and anyone who is curious about the coast.
My goal is for California Tide Pools to become a community resource. Visitors can contribute reviews so the guide gets more useful as more people explore responsibly.
